Fair housing
Fair housing.
Everyone deserves an equal opportunity to find a home.
Equal Housing Opportunity
We are committed to the letter and the spirit of federal and Virginia fair housing law. We support an open housing market in which everyone has an equal opportunity to buy, sell and rent a home.
Protected under federal law
The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of:
- race
- color
- national origin
- religion
- sex
- familial status
- disability
Protected under Virginia law
The Virginia Fair Housing Law makes it illegal to discriminate in residential housing on the basis of:
- race
- color
- religion
- national origin
- sex
- elderliness
- familial status
- disability
- source of funds
- sexual orientation
- gender identity
- military status
Under Virginia law, elderliness means being 55 or older, and familial status means having children under 18.
How this site follows it
- We describe homes and places, never the people who live in them or who a home might suit.
- We do not rate or rank schools. We name the public schools listed for an area and tell you to confirm assignments with Montgomery County Public Schools.
- We do not characterize neighborhoods by crime or by who lives there.
- Every inquiry gets the same prompt, professional response, whoever sends it.
If you believe you have faced discrimination
In Virginia, the Fair Housing Office of the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation investigates housing discrimination complaints. Call 804-367-8530 or 888-551-3247, or visit the Virginia Fair Housing Office. Complaints must be filed in writing within one year after the alleged discrimination occurred or ended.
