History

A school site, reborn.

New townhomes and condominiums on South Main Street, on the land where Blacksburg High School opened in 1952.

Midtown sits on South Main Street at Eheart Street, on land that held a school for half a century. Blacksburg High School's first building went up here in 1952. When the high school moved to new quarters, the building was adapted as Blacksburg Middle School.

By 2016 the roughly 20-acre site had been vacant since 2002. Montgomery County sold it that April for $4.25 million. In 2018 the Midtown partners asked the town to rezone the land, which then allowed four homes per acre, for a mixed-use neighborhood with about 300 homes, restaurants, shops, a park and more downtown parking. The review ran long, but the project went ahead in 2019.

In December 2019 Eagle Construction of Virginia, based in Richmond, joined the Midtown team to build the townhomes, with work on the first homes planned for 2020. Plans filed in 2020 also showed shops, restaurants, a new police department and a parking garage near downtown.
