History
A new neighborhood with an old name.
Single-family homes and townhomes just east of downtown, carrying one of Blacksburg's oldest place names.
Fiddler's Green is one of the newer neighborhoods close to downtown: a walkable mix of single-family homes and townhomes just east of downtown and Virginia Tech, with mountain views. Its neighbor, The Villas at Fiddlers Green, shares the name.
The name is an old one here. Fiddlers Green was a farm just south of the original town that John Black, of the family that founded Blacksburg, gave to his son Alexander in the 1820s. Its land later became the Miller-Southside neighborhood, where the 1919 plan renamed Water Street as Fiddlers Green Road. That road is Draper Road today.
A short walk southwest stands the Amiss-Palmer House, also called the Palmer House, a two-story brick house of the 1850s with Greek Revival details and its old kitchen, log house and smokehouse still on the property. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
