History

Mid-century, with a landmark.

A hillside subdivision of split-levels and ranch houses, and home to one of the finest modern houses in Virginia.

Highland Park is a mid-twentieth-century subdivision on the hills southeast of downtown, its winding streets lined with the brick split-levels and ranch houses of that era.

One of them is different. In 1960 Leonard Currie, head of the architecture department at what was then VPI, designed a house for his own family on a lot and a half on Highland Circle, and in 1961 the builder Charles Pascoe built it. Locals call it the Pagoda House for its sweeping hipped roof, which shelters a square house of wood, glass and brick wrapped by a deck with views toward the Roanoke Valley and Christiansburg.

Currie had studied under Walter Gropius at Harvard and worked with Gropius and Marcel Breuer before coming to Blacksburg in 1956. His house won a First Honor Award in the American Institute of Architects' Homes for Better Living program in 1962 and the Virginia Society AIA's Test of Time Award in 1982. In 1994, when it was barely 33 years old, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an exception to the usual 50-year rule, recognized in its nomination as the finest modern house of its era in southwest Virginia.

The town's nine-hole golf course is close by on Graves Avenue. It opened in the 1920s, the town bought it in 1971, and it is the oldest course in the New River Valley.

Good to know.

  • The Pagoda House

The Currie House at 1105 Highland Circle is known locally as the Pagoda House for its broad, sheltering hipped roof.

  • Bauhaus lineage

Its architect, Leonard Currie, studied under Walter Gropius and worked with Gropius and Marcel Breuer. He led architecture at Virginia Tech from 1956 to 1966.

  • Built for the climate

The deep roof overhang, the plan and the planting use passive solar principles, and radiant heating did away with radiators and unneeded vents.

  • Typical of its era

The National Register nomination describes the streets around it as standard brick split-level and ranch houses on hilly, winding streets.

  • A 1920s golf course nearby

The town's nine-hole course at 800 Graves Avenue, the oldest in the New River Valley, opened in the 1920s and was renovated in 2017.
