The story of Miller Southside.

Miller-Southside began as farmland just south of the town of Blacksburg as it was platted in 1798. Local memory called the farm Fiddlers Green. It belonged to a branch of the Black family, the town's founders, and changed hands several times before Juanita Miller Rucker bought the 53-acre tract in 1898.

Miller-Southside joins the Southside Land Company addition of 1913 and the Miller Addition of 1919. The nomination found the plan so consistent that the whole district seems to have been conceived at one time and built in phases.

  • Streets named for the developers

Eheart and Eakin Streets carry the names of Southside Land Company partners F. W. Ehart and J. L. Eakin. Price and Slusser Streets were later renamed Hemlock Drive and Edgewood Lane.

History

An early suburb, still intact.

Laid out in 1913 and 1919 on a farm called Fiddlers Green, the heart of Miller-Southside is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1913 her brother, A. Warren Miller, joined F. W. Ehart, J. L. Eakin, M. F. Slusser and J. G. Price as the Southside Land Company and laid out lots along South Main Street. The cross streets took the partners' names: Miller, Ehart, Eakin, Price and Slusser. In 1919 Miller and his sister laid out the Miller Addition to the west, on Draper Road (then Water Street) and Preston Avenue. The two additions held about 125 lots, each 50 feet wide, and many buyers bought two.

The first houses went up on South Main: a bungalow H. A. Graves built in 1909 and 1910, and a Foursquare J. H. Dehart ordered from Sears, Roebuck around 1915. Most of the houses date from the 1930s. The builder Wes Gray put up many of the brick Foursquares, and Clinton Harriman Cowgill, an architecture professor at what was then VPI, designed at least five Colonial and Georgian Revival houses here, plus his own Tudor Revival house on Preston Avenue in 1936.

From 1913 the developers wrote covenants into every deed: no shops or stables, a 20-foot setback, a minimum building cost, and a ban on selling or renting to Black people. Covenants like these were common in American suburbs of the time. The Supreme Court ruled them unenforceable in 1948, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 outlawed refusing to sell or rent a home because of race.

During World War II, South Main Street was extended south and the old road to Christiansburg was renamed Airport Road for the runway that bypassed it. Neighbors surveyed every house in 1988, and the district was listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1989 and the National Register in 1991, described as Montgomery County's largest and most complete suburb of 1909 to 1941. This page also covers the later streets around the district; Miller himself added a section to the west in the 1940s.
