The story of Hethwood.

Hethwood began in 1971 as the first master-planned community built by HHHunt, the developer Harry H. Hunt III founded in 1966 after he saw the need for faculty and student housing at Virginia Tech. It grew into houses and townhomes on 316 wooded acres, organized as five neighborhoods: Haymarket Square, Stroubles Mill, Mission Hills, Chowning Place and Pilgrim's Pointe, with trails, pools and tennis courts shared among them.

History

A planned community, from 1971.

HHHunt's first master-planned community: houses and townhomes on 316 wooded acres west of Virginia Tech, in five neighborhoods.

The land has a long history. The Draper and Ingles families built homes at Draper's Meadow by 1748, in the area between today's campus and Hethwood. The settlement was raided in 1755 during the French and Indian War, and Mary Draper Ingles, taken captive, escaped and walked home through the wilderness. Stroubles Creek, which the Batts and Fallam expedition followed in 1671, runs from the campus west to the New River.

At the community's southern edge stands Whitethorne, an Italian Villa style brick farmhouse built about 1855 by James Francis Preston, grandson of William Preston of Smithfield. Stockton Heth of Radford bought the farm in 1889. When Whitethorne was listed on the National Register in 1989, his grandson Henry Heth still kept more than 400 acres of farmland around the house and had allowed part of the farm to be developed as a residential subdivision and an apartment complex. Hethwood shares the family's name.

In the mid-1970s the Foxridge apartments off Prices Fork Road, still owned and managed by HHHunt, were built as part of the Hethwood development. The five neighborhoods range from the 1970s townhomes of Haymarket Square to the houses of Stroubles Mill and Mission Hills.
