History

A village plan on frontier ground.

Townhomes and single-family homes in neo-traditional styles, sharing a name with the creek that bounded the Draper's Meadow tract.

The Village at Tom's Creek is a newer community that mixes townhomes and single-family homes in neo-traditional architectural styles. Its streets, Honeysuckle Drive, Trillium Lane, Redbud Road and Poplar Ridge Circle, share their names with flowering plants and trees.

The Tom's Creek name is old. In 1753 Virginia's governor granted Col. James Patton the 7,500-acre tract that became known as Draper's Meadow, bordered by Tom's Creek on the north and Stroubles Creek on the south. Its settlement, on today's Virginia Tech campus, was raided in 1755. Before 1745, German families from Pennsylvania had begun settling the Prices Fork and Tom's Creek area, among the earliest European settlers in this part of Virginia.

The Tom's Creek name also belongs to a small community just outside town on Glade Road, home of the Brush Mountain Coal Miners Memorial, which honors the Brush Mountain coal miners.

  2. 1753James Patton receives the Draper's Meadow tract, bounded on the north by Tom's Creek.
