Virginia Tech undergraduate enrollment growth planning

Virginia Tech enrolled 31,536 undergraduates in fall 2025, up from 27,811 in 2018. In November 2025 university leaders gave the Board of Visitors enrollment modeling that included a scenario of 40,000 undergraduates by 2033, about 8,500 more, and said growth would require investment in housing, classrooms and student services. The board's amended housing resolution of Aug. 26, 2026 directs the university to plan residence hall renovation and construction together with managing undergraduate enrollment growth; the sources reviewed show no adopted enrollment target.

The project

The details.

The November 2025 presentation projected 1,200 new on-campus beds by 2029, followed by renovation and expansion projects through 2037, and noted that the number of high school graduates is expected to decline nationally beginning in 2026. The August 2026 resolution states that the university has instruction and lab space for moderate, predictable growth for a period of years and that expanding on-campus housing lets the board work with the Governor and General Assembly on admitting more Virginia students. Cardinal News reported that at the August 2026 board meeting Blacksburg's mayor said the town supports more on-campus housing and encouraged the board to meet housing needs proportionally as enrollment rises. Town Council's Resolution 5-A-25 (May 27, 2025) asked the board to collaborate with Town officials on the impact of student housing in Blacksburg.
