The project

The details.

SA-25-01 covers Prices Fork Road (Route 412) from west of the Route 460 Bypass to North Main Street, a 1.40-mile minor arterial with six major intersections, 2023 traffic of 23,800 vehicles per day (Route 460 Bypass to Stanger Street) and 20,100 (Stanger Street to North Main Street), and 239 crashes from 2020 to 2024, including 15 bicycle and 12 pedestrian crashes. SA-25-02 covers Route 412 from McCoy Road (Route 652) to US 460. Phase 2 concepts surveyed in December 2025 included longer left-turn lanes at Heather Drive and Old Glade Road, a median closure at Strock Street/Brightwood Manor Drive, an eastbound bike lane widening at West Campus Drive/Woodland Drive, a restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT) at McBryde Drive, signal and sidewalk changes at Toms Creek Road/Stanger Street, a crosswalk with pedestrian hybrid beacon at Orchard Street, 10-foot sidewalks from Webb Street to Orchard Street, and pedestrian-activated flashing lights at the North Main Street roundabout. At an October 21, 2025 Town Council work session, staff described this study and a concurrent Town study of Toms Creek Road from the US 460 Bypass to Prices Fork Road, said the highest priority area is Prices Fork Road east of the US 460 Bypass, and said both studies would be finalized before the SMART SCALE application in summer 2026. SMART SCALE Round 7 full applications were due August 3, 2026; VDOT reported to the NRV MPO on August 6, 2026 that 294 applications were submitted statewide (36 in the Salem District), with scores expected in January 2027. In March 2026, NRV MPO technical staff noted the MPO did not appear to be submitting projects that round. Whether a Prices Fork Road application was submitted could not be confirmed from public sources. Separately, VDOT project UPC 120697 (Prices Fork/Peppers Ferry Turn Lane Improvements, estimated $8,499,604) is at the far western end of Prices Fork Road (Route 685) where it meets Peppers Ferry Road (Route 114) in Montgomery County; VDOT told the MPO on August 6, 2026 that the contract was awarded and construction runs October 2026 to fall 2027.
