History
Six presidents on the street signs.
Classic ranchers and colonials off Prices Fork Road, on streets that share their names with early Virginia Tech presidents.
McBryde Village is an established neighborhood of classic ranchers and colonials off Prices Fork Road, within walking distance of the Virginia Tech campus.
Its street signs read like a page of the university's history. Buchanan, McBryde, Barringer, Burruss, Hutcheson and Newman are the surnames of six of Virginia Tech's first ten presidents: John Lee Buchanan (1880 to 1881), John McLaren McBryde (1891 to 1907), Paul Brandon Barringer (1907 to 1913), Julian Ashby Burruss (1919 to 1945), John Redd Hutcheson (1945 to 1947) and Walter Stephenson Newman (1947 to 1962).
McBryde, whose name the neighborhood shares, led the school through its change in 1896 from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute. He divided it into separate departments, broadened the curriculum and added an infirmary, a water system, dormitories and faculty housing. Enrollment grew from 135 students in 1891 to 727 by 1903. When he retired in 1907 he became the college's first president emeritus, and he came to be known as the father of VPI.
About a mile and a quarter south, on the campus, stands Smithfield, the plantation house Col. William Preston built from 1772 to 1774, birthplace of two Virginia governors.
