New Residence Halls (1,200 beds)
Virginia Tech is building four five-story residence halls with about 1,200 beds near the intersection of West Campus Drive and Duck Pond Drive, next to The Inn at Virginia Tech and the Holtzman Alumni Center. The Board of Visitors authorized construction on June 2, 2026, with a total budget of $280 million, and construction got underway in June 2026. The university targets occupancy at the start of the 2028-29 academic year.
The project
The details.
The project grew from a $10 million planning authorization for up to 600 beds (Aug. 20, 2025) and a $6 million planning supplement for 600 more beds (Nov. 18, 2025). The June 2, 2026 resolution added a $264 million construction supplement for a $280 million total, funded with $16 million of residential auxiliary cash and $264 million of debt repaid from residential program revenues. On Aug. 26, 2026 the board approved an amended resolution correcting a clerical error in the total building area, from 313,500 to 350,320 gross square feet. The university says the new beds will serve as swing space for planned renovations of Campbell, Slusher, Hoge and Pritchard halls. The Division of Facilities lists Whiting-Turner as contractor and Clark Nexsen as architect and gives a summer 2028 target completion; the June 8, 2026 campus impacts notice gives fall 2028 as the construction completion target. Announced construction impacts include closure of the west sidewalk of West Campus Drive at the Perry Street intersection, construction traffic crossing the south driveway, removal of six parking spaces in the lot southeast of the Holtzman Alumni Center, a re-routed asphalt path along Duck Pond Drive, and a planned temporary single-lane closure of Duck Pond Drive lasting no more than one week.
