Student Life Village (cancelled)

The Student Life Village was a Virginia Tech plan, adopted by the Board of Visitors on Nov. 13, 2022, to build housing for up to 5,000 students on the Virginia Tech Golf Course and Oak Lane property, with about 1,750 beds in Phase 1. On March 25, 2025 the board rescinded the plan. On May 27, 2025 the Blacksburg Town Council adopted Resolution 5-A-25 asking the board to rescind that decision; the university has since moved ahead with 1,200 new beds near Duck Pond Drive and renovations of existing residence halls.

The project

The details.

Cardinal News reported in November 2022 that the village would replace two residence halls holding about 1,300 students, for roughly 3,700 net new beds, at a projected $935 million over three phases. The board's March 25, 2025 action rescinded its Nov. 13, 2022 adoption of the 2022 Student Life Village Master Plan Amendment as a supplement to the campus master plan; a November 2025 board document describes the action as rescinding the planning authorization for 1,750 beds as Phase 1 and says the university then hired a consultant for long-term residential planning. The Division of Facilities lists Phase 1 as halted, with Clark Construction as contractor and Little + BOUDREAUX as architect. Town Council discussed the board's decision at its April 1, 2025 work session alongside a housing market update. Resolution 5-A-25 noted that Town Council had supported the village in an Oct. 28, 2022 letter and had approved 6,000 beds of off-campus housing in recent years, and it asked the board to rescind its March 25, 2025 resolution, study on-campus housing needs further and collaborate with Town officials on the impact of student housing in Blacksburg. It passed 7-0 on the consent agenda. The sources reviewed show no later board action restoring the plan.
