History
Acreage below a coal mountain.
Homes on sites of one to 10 acres just north of the town limits, near a mountain with a coal-mining past.
Brush Mountain Estates is a neighborhood just north of the Blacksburg town limits, where homes sit on sites ranging from one to 10 acres along streets such as Gordon Drive, Belaire Drive and Fortress Drive.
Mining here is older than any railroad. Pit mining was recorded on Toms Creek at the foot of Brush Mountain in 1790, and when the county's coal mines were mapped in 1907, seven of the eleven were on Brush Mountain.
Brush Mountain has a working past. The mines around it included a state-run mine that supplied coal to Virginia Tech and many privately owned mines that supplied coal to heat homes in the surrounding communities. The Virginia Anthracite Coal Company held property on Price and Brush Mountains, surveyed in a 1905 geological report now in Virginia Tech's Special Collections, and the rail line of the Virginia Anthracite Coal and Railway Company, nicknamed the Huckleberry, is now the Huckleberry Trail. The Brush Mountain Coal Miners Memorial on Glade Road, in the Tom's Creek community, honors miners killed in the mines.
Farther east on Mount Tabor Road, the Slusser-Ryan Farm keeps a log house begun in 1855 and a small 19th-century coal mine, probably worked for the farm's own use. It was listed on the National Register in 2017.
