Houses along Brush Mountain Road north of town, near a mountain with a coal-mining past.
Brush Mountain West lies along Brush Mountain Road north of Blacksburg, with nearby streets such as Evergreen Trail, Buck Mountain Ridge and Mountain Laurel Ridge.
Brush Mountain has a working past. The mines around it included a state-run mine that supplied coal to Virginia Tech and many privately owned mines that supplied coal to heat homes in the surrounding communities. The Virginia Anthracite Coal Company held property on Price and Brush Mountains, surveyed in a 1905 geological report now in Virginia Tech's Special Collections, and the rail line of the Virginia Anthracite Coal and Railway Company, nicknamed the Huckleberry, is now the Huckleberry Trail. The Brush Mountain Coal Miners Memorial on Glade Road, in the Tom's Creek community, honors miners killed in the mines.
East of here on Mount Tabor Road, the Slusser-Ryan Farm keeps a log house begun in 1855 and a small 19th-century coal mine. It was listed on the National Register in 2017.
