Big lots at the forest's edge.
Wooded home sites of 2.5 to 11 acres north of town, connected to the Jefferson National Forest.
Preston Forest is a neighborhood of large wooded lots north of Blacksburg, from 2.5 to 11 acres, connected to the Jefferson National Forest.
Its street names reach back to Smithfield and the Preston family. Smithfield Drive, Susannah Drive, Patton Court and Ballard Court share their names with Smithfield, the plantation house Col. William Preston built from 1772 to 1774, and with the people in its story: James Patton, whose 120,000-acre Crown grant included the site; Susanna Smith Preston, William's wife, who lived at Smithfield for 40 years after his death in 1783; and their grandson William Ballard Preston, who was born there.
Smithfield still stands about five miles south, on the Virginia Tech campus. It was the birthplace of two Virginia governors, James Patton Preston and John B. Floyd, and remained a family home until 1959, when it was donated to the APVA.
