History

Condominiums in Kent Square, the downtown block the town planned in 2002 around a new parking garage.
Kent Square is a mixed-use block on South Main Street in downtown Blacksburg, with shops and offices at street level, condominiums on its upper floors and a parking garage at the corner of Main and Washington Streets.
The town proposed Kent Square in 2002 as a retail development for downtown. The plan put the garage on the site of the Alexander Black House, a Queen Anne Victorian built around 1897 for a great-great-grandson of Samuel Black, who bought the land the town stands on. Town Council set aside $2 million for the garage, bought the house and moved it to Draper Road, where it was restored, by 2014, as the home of the Blacksburg Museum.
By the fall of 2005 the garage was open with 350 spaces, wrapped in about 80,000 square feet of shops and offices. A town councilman held it up as smart growth: several blocks' worth of development consolidated into one.
The block sits among some of downtown's oldest buildings, in the town William Black laid out on a sixteen-square grid in 1798. Steps away are the Phillips-Ronald House of 1851 and 1852, known as Five Chimneys, and the 1924 Blacksburg Motor Company building, both on the National Register.
