History

Condominiums at Main and Clay.

A horseshoe of condominiums and shops on less than an acre at the corner of Main and Clay Streets, built in the mid-2000s.

Clay Court stands right on Main Street at the corner of Clay Street, in the heart of downtown. It was developed by Steve Hill as a horseshoe-shaped building on just under one acre, with condominiums and about 9,000 square feet of shops and commercial space.

In the fall of 2005 Virginia Tech Magazine reported the first phase nearly complete: 16 modular condominiums and 52 parking spaces. The magazine counted it, with the Kent Square garage nearby, among the smart-growth projects then reshaping Main Street.

Its next-door neighbor is one of downtown's landmarks. The Blacksburg Motor Company building of 1924, expanded about 1933, housed the town's first auto dealership. It has Art Deco and Moderne details, was listed on the National Register in 2008, and now holds town planning and engineering offices. The Phillips-Ronald House, a brick house of 1851 and 1852 known as Five Chimneys, is a short walk west.
