History

A name from the mines.

A newer neighborhood of houses north of town, near Brush Mountain and its coal-mining past.

Coal Bank Ridge is a newer neighborhood of houses north of Blacksburg, along Coalwood Way and Treetop Ridge Road.

Brush Mountain has a working past. The mines around it included a state-run mine that supplied coal to Virginia Tech and many privately owned mines that supplied coal to heat homes in the surrounding communities. The Virginia Anthracite Coal Company held property on Price and Brush Mountains, surveyed in a 1905 geological report now in Virginia Tech's Special Collections, and the rail line of the Virginia Anthracite Coal and Railway Company, nicknamed the Huckleberry, is now the Huckleberry Trail. The Brush Mountain Coal Miners Memorial on Glade Road, in the Tom's Creek community, honors miners killed in the mines.

About a mile northeast, on Mount Tabor Road, the Slusser-Ryan Farm still has a small 19th-century coal mine on its property, probably worked for the farm's own use, beside a log house begun in 1855. The farm was listed on the National Register in 2017.

Timeline

  3. 1958Passenger service ends on the Huckleberry rail line.
  4. 1996The first section of the Huckleberry Trail opens on the old rail line.
