History

Near the schoolhouse corner.

Newer homes off Mount Tabor Road, close to the corner where the Mt. Tabor community kept its school for ninety years.

Mt. Tabor Village is a neighborhood of newer homes on Tabor Village Drive and Horseshoe Lane, off Mount Tabor Road on the northeast side of Blacksburg. The road, and the neighborhood, carry the name of the old Mt. Tabor community.

That community's school stood a short walk from here, at the corner of Happy Hollow and Mount Tabor roads. It began in 1874 as a one-room log school on Job Hale's land, listed as Hale's No. 4. A second room came in 1904, along with the name Mt. Tabor School. In 1915 a new frame school replaced the log one on the same site, a third room was added in 1920, and in 1950 the building was bricked.

In its later years three teachers taught more than a hundred children there, two grades to a room. Like most of the county's small schools it closed as buses and new buildings took over: in 1965 its pupils moved to Gilbert Linkous Elementary, which had opened in town the year before. The old schoolhouse was later turned into apartments.

Timeline
