Your first weeks on the job
Before you start
New staff, faculty and non-student wage employees get a series of emails through the PageUp onboarding portal. The first ones cover required forms, including the federal Form I-9 and tax forms, with their deadlines.
Benefits orientation
New employees attend a benefits orientation within their first month, because of benefits enrollment deadlines. Tuition benefits open to salaried employees after 90 days.
Parking
Employee parking permits depend on employment classification and are valid from the first day of paid employment. Full-time employees at the Blacksburg campus can buy a permit outside the standard enrollment period through a pro-rated payroll deduction pilot program. Questions about other ways to get to work go to the university's Alternative Transportation Department.
Required training
New hires complete required courses in the PageUp Learning Management System, some within 90 days of hire.

Rent first, or buy now
From a ratified contract to closing is about six weeks. To own a home by your start date, count back from that date and leave time to find the right home first. Blacksburg homes that sold in the last 12 months spent a median of 18 days on the market, so good homes do not wait long.
Not ready to buy? The university's Blacksburg relocation guide lists local rental and short-term housing resources. Renting first gives you time to learn the town; new listing alerts keep you current while you do.

County plus Town
Blacksburg Transit connects neighborhoods, shopping areas and the Virginia Tech campus, and runs routes in Christiansburg too. The Smart Way bus to Roanoke and its airport stops at the Transit Center on campus for $4 each way.
Public schools are run by Montgomery County Public Schools, and the address decides the assigned school. The schools guide shows how to confirm one. Taxes are in the property tax guide.
The wider region
Virginia Tech describes the New River Valley as 15 small-town communities in four counties (Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski) and one city (Radford). Comparing Blacksburg with the closest town? Read Blacksburg or Christiansburg, and see the commuting guide for roads, buses, flights and trains.
