Draper Road Streetscape

Town project to rebuild Draper Road between College Avenue and Washington Street downtown with wider sidewalks, outdoor dining areas, public spaces and improved bicycle accommodations, following the community-developed "bold + blended" concept with limited vehicle access. Interim improvements were built in August and September 2024. The Town's project page (updated July 27, 2026) shows final design beginning in summer 2026, final construction beginning in summer 2027 and completion in summer 2029.

The details.

The Town's September 2025 application for FY 2029 and FY 2030 VDOT Revenue Sharing funds (Resolution 9-A-25, adopted September 9, 2025) listed Draper Road Streetscape at $10,107,532 total ($5,053,766 Town and $5,053,766 VDOT). The same application listed a Clay Street Sidewalk project at $8,423,204. The NRV MPO 2050 Constrained Long-Range Transportation Plan (approved November 6, 2025) lists Draper Road Streetscape at an estimated $10,600,000. A Commonwealth Transportation Board presentation on April 20, 2026 reported FY 2029 and FY 2030 Revenue Sharing proposed funding for 21 projects in the Salem District but did not list individual localities, so whether Blacksburg's Draper Road request was funded could not be confirmed. Public input for the final design included an engagement booth at the Blacksburg Farmers Market on June 20, 2026 and a survey that closed July 26, 2026.
