Residence hall renovation program (Campbell, Slusher, Hoge and Pritchard halls)

The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors has authorized design funding to renovate four existing residence halls on the Blacksburg campus: Campbell (329 beds), Slusher (631 beds), Hoge, and Pritchard (1,016 beds in two phases). The board's amended resolution of Aug. 26, 2026 sets construction targets from summer 2027 (Campbell) through summer 2035 (Pritchard phase 2). Authorizations so far cover planning and design; the resolutions say construction funding would come in later requests.

The project

The details.

Planning funds approved: Campbell Hall $4 million (Aug. 20, 2025, with a target total project cost of $40 million); Slusher Hall $6.5 million, Hoge Hall $9 million and Pritchard Hall $12 million (Feb. 5, 2026). The board resolution estimates critical renovation and repair needs of about $98 million for Slusher (built 1972), $135 million for Hoge (built 1966) and $197 million for Pritchard (built 1967). Target windows in the amended resolution: Campbell construction starting summer 2027 and finishing no later than summer 2029; Slusher starting on or before summer 2028 and finishing no later than summer 2030; Hoge starting on or before summer 2030 and finishing no later than summer 2032; Pritchard phase 1 (508 beds) starting on or before summer 2032 and finishing no later than summer 2034, and phase 2 (508 beds) starting on or before summer 2034 and finishing no later than summer 2035. Planned work includes building envelopes, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, rooms and bathrooms, ADA compliance and, where needed, elevators and air conditioning. The February 2026 resolution also proposed adding about 130 beds by expanding the Slusher wing; the Aug. 26, 2026 amendment removed that expansion, and Cardinal News reported that a re-evaluation found the existing foundation could not support additional loads. The February 2026 resolution rescinded a Nov. 18, 2025 planning authorization of up to $5 million for a single high-priority residence hall renovation, and it calls for quarterly progress updates to the board. The 1,200 new beds near Duck Pond Drive are intended as swing space during these renovations. Bed counts differ slightly between official sources: the Division of Facilities Slusher Hall page lists 630 beds, while the 2026 board resolution lists 631.
