History
Cottages by the airfield.
Classic bungalows and cottages on the south side of town, next door to the airfield Blacksburg has flown from since 1929.
Airport Acres is a neighborhood of classic bungalows and cottages on the south side of town, along Airport Road, Fairview Avenue, Rose Avenue and Dehart Street.
Its neighbor shaped its story. Blacksburg's first landing strip, a grass runway 1,800 feet long, was built in 1929 and given airport status in 1931 as VPI Airport. Virginia Tech cadets trained to fly there during World War II. The runway changed the map too: during the war South Main Street was extended south, bypassing the old road to Christiansburg, and that road was renamed Airport Road for the runway.
The field later became Virginia Tech Airport, gained a new terminal in 1996 and took its current name, Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport, in 2002. It covers 248 acres, with a 5,500-foot paved runway, about three miles south of downtown.
