Chowning Place is one of the five neighborhoods that make up Hethwood, the master-planned community HHHunt began in 1971 on 316 wooded acres west of Virginia Tech. Its attached homes were built mainly in the early 1990s, two decades after the first Hethwood townhomes in Haymarket Square.

Chowning Place is one of the five neighborhoods that make up Hethwood, the master-planned community HHHunt began in 1971 on 316 wooded acres west of Virginia Tech. Its attached homes were built mainly in the early 1990s, two decades after the first Hethwood townhomes in Haymarket Square.
Residents share Hethwood's trails, pool, tennis courts and playgrounds with the community's other neighborhoods: Haymarket Square, Stroubles Mill, Mission Hills and Pilgrim's Pointe.
