History

Beside a Preston farmhouse.

A Hethwood neighborhood of houses, with streets that share names with famous Virginia homes and an 1850s Preston farmhouse at its edge.

Stroubles Mill is one of the five neighborhoods of Hethwood, the planned community HHHunt began in 1971. It is a neighborhood of detached houses in a wide range of styles: colonials, ranchers, split-levels and contemporaries.

Several of its streets share their names with famous Virginia homes: Mount Vernon, Monticello, Ash Lawn and Wakefield. One street holds a historic house of its own. Whitethorne, at 200 Monticello Lane, is a two-story brick farmhouse in the Italian Villa style built about 1855 by James Francis Preston, son of Governor James Patton Preston and grandson of William Preston, who built Smithfield in the 1770s.

James Francis Preston was a lawyer and Montgomery County's commonwealth's attorney. He commanded the 4th Virginia Infantry early in the Civil War and died in 1862. Stockton Heth of Radford bought the farm in 1889, and his family still held it a century later; the 1989 National Register nomination notes that part of the farm had been developed as a residential subdivision and apartment complex while farmland still surrounded the house.

Stroubles Creek, which shares the neighborhood's name, runs through Blacksburg and the Virginia Tech campus, where a dam forms the Duck Pond, and on west to the New River.
