History

Streets with founders' names.

An established neighborhood just off the historic 16 squares of downtown, on streets named in 1913.

Mountain View sits just off the historic 16 squares of downtown Blacksburg, the grid William Black laid out in 1798. Its homes line streets such as Kentwood Drive, Hemlock Drive, Eakin Street and Eheart Street.

Several of those street names go back to 1913, when five local men formed the Southside Land Company and laid out the land south of downtown. They named the cross streets for themselves: Miller, Ehart, Eakin, Price and Slusser. Eakin and Eheart Streets still carry two of those names, for J. L. Eakin and F. W. Ehart. Price Street was later renamed Hemlock Drive. The heart of the company's development is now the Miller-Southside Residential Historic District, a few blocks west.
