History
New homes on an old road.
A new community of single-family homes and townhomes on Prices Fork Road, near the historic village of Prices Fork.
The Preserve is one of the newest communities on the west side of Blacksburg: single-family homes and townhomes built by Eagle Construction of Virginia, a Richmond-based builder, on Prices Fork Road. The same builder has also built the Midtown townhomes downtown.
The road it sits on is old. Prices Fork, the village about three miles west of Blacksburg, takes its name from the Price, or Preisch, family, German settlers whose land bordered both sides of the road. German families from Pennsylvania settled the Prices Fork and Tom's Creek area before 1745, among the earliest European settlers in this part of Virginia, and the village grew up in the mid-19th century.
Its historic district, listed on the National Register in 1991, includes the James Bain Price House and Price Store, both of 1871. Closer still, less than half a mile southeast of The Preserve, stands Evans House No. 2, a two-story brick house of about 1860 with stepped-shoulder chimneys, and under a mile northeast is the Joseph McDonald Farm, whose log house dates to about 1800. Both are on the National Register.
